Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts slated May 1 to 8


VIGAN CITY, April 28 (PIA) — All is set for the celebration of the 2011 Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts in this world’s heritage city, which will start on May 1 and ends on May 8.

Vigan City Mayor Eva Marie Singson – Medina told that thousands local and foreign tourists are again expected to come and watch the attractive presentations of the art’s festival.

Highlighting the activities of the festival include the May 1 floral offering at Don Isabelo de los Reyes – the father of Labor Union, at its marker built infront of his former residence at the entrance of Mena Crisologo Street to coincide relation with the observance of Labor Day; the “Abel” house décor set–up; the formal opening program of the 2011 Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the arts; the opening of the exhibits, garden show, trade and food fair; Vigan antiques and furniture show; the Vigan lakbay barangay tourism fair; an exhibit by Angono artists association and University of Northern Philippines; photo exhibits by George Dawkins, DEKADA exhibit in celebration of the 10th Vigan Cityhood; Calesa Parade; contest and SMB disco sa Kalye.

May 2 – SK amazing heritage race, Choroeographic Festival featuring the output of Douglas Nierras Powerdance and the Angklong and Marimba Ensemble; May 3 – Holy Mass in honor of Apo Lakay and Santacruzan procession; May 4 – Bankathon and fishing competition; May 5 – Traditional games, Smart Games of DWRS and Gayem parade; May 6 – Carabao painting contest and parade, Boklan art contest, audition for Pilipinas Got Talent and Baba eng Digmaan; May 7 – Taray Salluad Tawid 2011: Fun Run for Heritage Conservation, Binatbatan street dancing contest and Binatbatan showdown; and May 8 – free dog anti-rabies vaccination, dog and handler got talent, abel – house décor judging and Vigan souvenir competition judging.

The Viva Vigan Festival of the arts was launched in 1993 and the “Binatbatan” street dancing, which showcased the traditional Ilocano way of beating the cotton pods with two bamboo sticks to separate the seeds from the fluff, the first process in making the “Iluko-Abel”, started in 2002.
